Funded solution: Artemis Analytical
About the company:
Artemis Analytical Ltd is a specialised deep-tech and analytical chemistry company headquartered at the University of Manchester (Schuster Building). The company bridges the gap between quantum physics and advanced environmental testing, focusing on solving one of the oldest limitations in analytical science: isobaric interference (when different elements share the exact same atomic mass, making them indistinguishable on a standard scale).
Challenge:
To develop a compact laser-based hybrid mass spectrometry prototype that is cost-efficient and able to meet surging soil-monitoring regulatory demands.
Solution:
In this project we will combine Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS) with laser Resonance Ionisation Spectroscopy (RIS). This allows the plasma to operate at a lower temperature and use high-resolution lasers to resonantly excite and ionise only the target elements based on their unique "atomic fingerprint" before mass separation. This approach removes interferences directly inside the instrument without complex chemical sample preparation , while reducing argon gas and electrical power consumption.
